Abstract

Studies the historical context in which the Spanic State sent, between 1862 and 1865, its last expedition of naturalists to America, calling it the Pacific Ocean Scientific Commission. Through the analysis of several testimonies, taken mostly from diplomatic reports, the author examines the strategic motivations that moved the leaders of the Liberal Union to dispatch a naval squadron to the Pacific, adding a scientific commission to it at the last moment.
