Stresses the humanistic value of Hernández, which contrasts with the historical situation of Spain in the sixties (scarcity of American precious metals and insufficient budget, American and European rebellions, poor knowledge of resources in order to establish the appropiate policies). In this context Hernández's expedition to Mexico is interpreted, comparing his scientific interests and official utilitariam intentions.
