Abstract

Using French and Spanish examples, this article offers a general political interpretation of eighteenth-century expeditions in order to explain coherently certain elements which do not fit in with the utilitarian explanations that are usually given. The testimonies of conternporary protagonists and witnesses are strategically quoted and the author suggests a cultural cornparison of an anthropological type regarding "political" conduct of Amerindian peoples.
