Abstract

The objective of this paper is to present an image of the Philippines at the end of the 19th century, different to the picture of underveloped islands, inhabitated by savages unable to selfgovernment, transmited by the historiography and caricatures of that time. With this purpose, they are studied the process of redefinition of the Spanish colonial goverment, the strengthening of a new filipino society, the development of the economy and commerce, and the strong international interests in the islands.
