Between the end of the Spanish dominion in 1899, and the birth of the Republic in 1902, the Cuban countryside was disturbed by protests raised by peasants and rural workers. Vis a vis this mobilization the press unearthed the ghost of bandolerism. However it is doubtful whether it was really a matter of bandolerism revival. This article studies the peasant responses of the time, their reasonsand behaviour, so as to establish the internal regularities of the process and its relation with the economical, political and social situation of the Island.
