This study focuses on the role of «the fleet of New Spain» (founded in 1637) in its function as protector of the coasts and escort of merchant ships in the area. Special altention is given to its participation in the export of European mercury -fundamental for the extraction of Mexican silver-; underlining the value of trade in this metal between 1640 and 1753. The study is based on sources in the General Archive of the Indies that quantify shipments of mercury and dispatch of fleets
