Abstract

The analysis of the Spanish colonization policy in Cuba during the nineteenth century gives us some clues regarding the study of inmigration, considered as a process which was simultaneous with the importation of African slaves and not as a phenomenon which opposed slavery. The labour provided by these white inmigrants was fundamental in the transition from slave labour to paid labour, as well as being a factor of «civilization» and an alternative to the economic system based on sugar plantations.
